Bye Bikes
Project Bye Bikes
Station Square will be converted into the public attraction and visiting-card of Amersfoort, an enticing entry to a sustainable city, filled with new recreative and economic activities, green terraces, cafés and art-works.
At present this potential is not utilised at all; the bikes and taxies are in the way. This project shows that there is a solution from which all would benefit: cyclists, travellers, the economy and the environment and therefore Amersfoort. The solution? Bye Bikes: “No more bikes on the Station Square of Amersfoort.”
Problems charted
The station square in Amersfoort is not attractive to visitors and travellers. The disappearance of the bicycles, however, is politically a very sensitive question as various parties are in favour of the cyclist. Their standpoint is: “Sufficient possibilities for FREE parking close to the station”. Furthermore good enforcement must be carried out which is only possible when there are sufficient parking possibilities. There are, however, other options than in the middle of the square.
Poor connection
Connection with the centre, the Eem Square and the Zoo (750.000 visitors a year) is poor and not conveniently arranged. And with restructuring the square this too was examined. The Station Square will put Amersfoort on the map and would greatly influence the number of visitors and the economy of Amersfoort.
Vision
Project Bye Bikes was initiated in order to free Station Square of all bicycles. This would, however, not come about by simply placing metal holders somewhere else, but by placing stables that are more user friendly than those presently available. The Station Square would be organised as the public attraction and visiting-card of Amersfoort.
Subsequently connections would also be made to the Town Centre, the Eem Square, the Zoo and the Station by means of the attractive “People Movers”. In this way Amersfoort would obtain a progressive and sustainable status.
