Real Food in the Eemstad

Real Food in the Eemstad

Echt Eemstad in the Eemstad – which translates into Real Food in the Eemstad, and Eemstad is Amersfoort, through which the river Eem flows – was a One Planet project in 2011-2012. Our project was supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Agriculture, with the aim of stimulating the production and consumption of local, organic food in the Amersfoort region. It was a very successful project with nine daughter initiatives. As a result of this One Planet initiative, Amersfoort was crowned the national “Capital of Taste” in 2012.

Bart Pijnenburg and Edgar van Groningen, two local citizens, were the leaders of the project. They came to One Planet with the ambition to stimulate the consumption of locally grown food. Because this was good for the local economy, strengthened city-farmland relations, and was obviously good for health and CO2 reduction, One Planet embraced their ambition and added a new project to our portfolio, with Bart and Edgar as project leaders. With a subsidy from the Ministry of Agriculture, nine subsidiary projects were set up, some of which are still running to this day.

Very well done Bart and Edgar! They were excellent and motivated project leaders. Below are some of the very many media reports about the project. They really put Amersfoort and local food on the map with a whole string of initiatives and events that invigorated the city for one and a half years! Street restaurants, pancake safari’s, Food Trails, food debates, mobiel kitchens, street markets for farmers … you name it, they did it!
