EcoErf Mastenbroek

EcoErf Mastenbroek

Based on our innovative sustainability concept EcoErf, in 2009 One Planet and MensenLand jointly developed a plan for 10 energy-neutral timber-frame eco-houses, on 10 hectares of agricultural land in Mastenbroek, adjacent to a protected nature area of Utrecht Landscape. One Planet wanted to buy this site and add it to Utrechtse Landschap. With a resident covenant that – as long as the residents demonstrably have no waste or other environmental-adverse effect or CO2 emissions – they may place their homes on short poles above the ground. So, for example, no private cars standing idle 95% of the time, but a few shared cars used 60% of the time. The residents also undertake to contribute specifically to the maintenance and ecological enrichment of the site. This would be a model for a new way of life – with land owned by a charitable foundation, and residents as tenants thereon under strict conditions of ecological life on a low footprint. In short ‘the good life, but green.’

The municipality was willing to give permission to this plan from One Planet. But alas, after a lot of work … when it came to final negotiations for the purchase of the land, the farmer who owned it wanted twice the official appraisal value for his land! His thought was; in the future the city of Amersfoort will expand in my direction, then my ground is worth gold to developers. And that is why our One Planet project EcoErf Mastenbroek did not go through …
